In a speech today presidential- hopeful Mitt Romney made the statement “Corporations are people too.” This was his attempt to defend the tax breaks that the Republican Party has supported for years. He was trying to explain that corporations are made of people and when they are prosperous it is good for the country. Simply, we all benefit, when corporations do well. I will not waste your time quoting the bonuses CEOs earn each year and the fact that many corporations may do well and still layoff employees. I will tell you that Mr. Romney’s views are not odd, when it comes to how our politicians think. I am referring to both parties because they both have done their part in hurting this economy.
The problem in this election cycle is the Tea Party. This is a movement that has been more than just a headache for the Republican Party. It has caused them to rethink their stance on age old views they once subscribed to. The person in the crowd that asked Mr. Romney this question was no doubt a supporter of this party’s views. Mitt’s statement also revealed, in words, what all Americans should already have known and that is, the politicians that we have elected to office are completely out of touch with the issues of the people that they are elected to represent.
My current employer encouraged us to write letters to our local congressman (Jeff Sessions Al-R) and tell him that we were not in support of him cutting Medicare benefits. These are benefits that working people have paid into and if we are not able to take care of those that cannot take care of themselves. How great of nation are we? These politicians are the same ones that run for office on a moral platform while forgetting that the bible states “the poor will always be with you.” I will thank Mr. Sessions because he was nice enough to send me and several of my friends a letters back. In these letters, he said that he would basically vote on what he thought was best for his community and while he appreciated our concerns, he would not take them into consideration when he votes. WOW!!
Here is an elected official that is cocky enough to tell his constituents, that he basically did not give a damn what we thought, he was voting his own views. How long will we, as Americans, put up with this type of treason? Yes, I call it treason. The word treason is defined as “a crime that covers some of the more serious acts of betrayal of one's sovereign or nation.” This is exactly what Mr. Sessions is doing. He is betraying his community’s welfare for his own personal accomplishments. It is truly a sad day in this country when we, as citizens, allow the few to dictate the futures of the masses.
